Review: City of Bones

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare is a very popular Young Adult fantasy series. A perfect fit for me. I’ve seen the movie, I’ve watched the TV-series, but for some reason there was always something about the story that I didn’t like. Still, I tried to read City of Bones with a fresh, new look.

Storyline
Clary Fray is a young red-haired girl from Brooklyn, New York. She lives in a small apartment with her mother. One day, Clary decides to go to the club Pandemonium with her best friend Simon. There she discovers that she has ‘the sight’, she can see things that Simon can not.

In The Mortal Instruments series every supernatural being is real. Witches, vampires, warlocks, demons, fairy’s, werewolves and last but not least: Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters kill demons to protect humans, and Clary Fray is one of them. The only thing is, she doesn’t know that, until she meets fellow Shadowhunters Jace, Isabelle and Alec.

From that moment on, Clary’s life is changing by the minute. She discovers new things about her past and family and needs to do everything to protect the ones that she loves.

Opinion
I feel like The Mortal Instruments is a series that has the potential to be great, but I haven’t really felt it yet. I’m still waiting for a moment that has me really, really hooked. But, there is a reason I keep on trying to like this series.  The storyline is very detailed and sometimes complicated, but it is an original story. It’s nothing like I’ve read before.

What I missed in City of Bones, was the character development from basically everyone but Clary. I wanted to know more about Hodge, Izzy, Alec and Magnus but all that I got from them was some quotes and plottwists. I’m still very excited to read the second book, City of Ashes.
